This morning Early Learning Challenge competitive grants were awarded to nine states: California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington
Get ready: Early Learning Challenge awards will be announced Friday, December 16, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern.
Heads up: We hear from solid - though unofficial - sources that Early Learning Challenge winners will be announced this Friday morning from Washington.
The first round of states selected to win an Early Learning Challenge grant haven't been announced, but that hasn't stopped prognostications that the initiative won't significantly impact early learning policy. The critics have their points, but the bottom line is that the Challenge is a major step forward at a critical time.

As big fans of quality, accountability, and improved outcomes for our nation’s most at-risk kids, we at the First Five Years Fund are heartened by President Obama’s announcement earlier today of new regulations for competition in the Head Start grant process.
