Thirty-five states, DC and Puerto Rico competed to win a chunk of $500 million to improve education outcomes for our nation's youngest and most vulnerable children. On December 16, nine states were selected for round one: California, Delaware, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington. While only a handful of applications were funded, the competition has kick-started policy reforms and laid the groundwork for innovation in early childhood.
