Earlier today, the Center for American Progress hosted a special Invest in US event featuring ways that states and communities are implementing strong early learning programs to benefit children, families and the economy.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe was the day’s keynote speaker and  highlighted the ways that investing in high-quality early education have a positive effect on his state’s economy, noting that early learning is the top priority of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. “My top priority as governor is building a new Virginia economy that is strong, diverse, and capable of weathering the federal budget storms that regularly rage through our commonwealth,” Governor McAuliffe said. “A key part of reaching that goal is the recognition that educational opportunity and job opportunity go hand in hand.”

Other panelists at the event included:

  • Andy Berke, Mayor of Chattanooga, TN
  • John King, Senior Adviser at U.S. Department of Education
  • Jennie Moline O’Holleran, Virginia Deputy Secretary of Education
