CDC Guidance for Operating Child Care Programs During COVID-19

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated guidance for operating child care programs during COVID-19 based on the most recent science and new evidence around important prevention strategies that can allow child care programs to operate safely and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

During a national press conference, Dr, Rochelle Walensky, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, spoke extensively about the essential role of child care for children, families, and the economy, and provided information about the updated guidance released today:

“As a child care provider, you can help protect children, their families, and staff and slow the spread of COVID-19 by using CDC’s updated Guidance for Operating Child Care Programs during COVID-19. Tailor your COVID-19 plan based on the unique needs of your child care program and the spread and impact of COVID-19 in your community.”

Earlier this week, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law, which includes $39 billion in relief funding for child care providers. This funding can be used for, among other things, personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies or services. The law also suggests providers may use funding to implement health and safety policies “in line with guidance from State, Tribal, and local authorities, and to the greatest extent possible, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
